The government of India is accelerating its efforts to cut down container dwell times that have long been a major cause of port congestion and shipping concern over rising inland costs. To address those issues especially at JNPT, the ministry has asked the port to set up a task force to speed up productivity boosting measures. “A formal coordination team consisting of members from all stakeholders should be formed at JNPT, which will be responsible for implementation of issues discussed in the review meetings,” the ministry said.

The ministry directed stakeholders to scale up the share of cargo cleared under the direct port delivery scheme at the port to 30 per cent by the end of December. Additional steps on the export side include introduction of RFID technology at gate procedures, reduction of gate hours for cargo carting from 5 days to 3 days.
