  • 11 ambassadors meet JNPT officials to promote trade

Promotion of trade between India and the rest of the world has become a crucial task as boosting exports will give a fillip to Indian economy. Awareness in the global markets about Indian capabilities in various manufacturing sectors can result in many international companies setting up manufacturing base in India.

It is in this background that a familiarisation meeting was organised for 11 ambassadors from India to various countries by JNPT in Mumbai to update the heads of missions about the infrastructure developments and the various investment opportunities which could boost trade from India to these countries. Indian Ambassadors to Saudi Arabia, Russia, Colombia, Australia, South Africa, Belarus, Denmark, Tunisia, Fiji, Korea and Turkmenistan attended the JNPT meet and explored possibilities of promoting trade.

Shri Neeraj Bansal, Chairman-in-Charge appraised 11 Indian Ambassador about JNPT’s overall operations and highlighted the various measures implemented to promote Ease of Doing Business and Sagarmala projects at JNPT in the last few years. JNPT is ranked 33th among the global ports and is the largest container port in the country. JNPT handled the highest ever volume of 4.83 million TEUs for the year ended March 2018 and its capacity is slated to double at 10 million TEUs after the completion of the construction of second phase of the 4th terminal in 2022. Shri Bansal also explained how JNPT is deploying technological benefits to reduce time and cost of transporting cargo from port to their respective destinations.

JNPT is popularising Direct Port Delivery (DPD) and Direct Port Entry (DPE) to reduce congestion and save time and cost for EXIM Trade. Logistics costs in India are comparatively higher by global standards and there is an immediate need to bring logistics costs down to make the economy more efficient and compete at the global level, Shri Bansal said.

Shri Bansal also briefed the heads of missions on setting up of 4 new dry ports and a state-of the-art SEZ on 277 hectares of JNPT land. While dry ports will result in movement of cargo from hinterland to ports on a planned basis, setting up of SEZ will attract global investments to turn India into a manufacturing hub. Shri Bansal disclosed that many leading firms have shown interest in setting up units at SEZ and this would result in creation of direct and indirect jobs to 1.25 people of the local area.

Shri Bansal also shared the details of infrastructure facilities that are being developed for seamless movement of cargo and offer best-in-class facilities to EXIM trade.

The ambassadors expressed their happiness about the progress of JNPT and world class facilities being set up to promote trade.
