Major Ports handle more coal in April-May

The Major Ports handled around 19.53 million tonnes (mt) of thermal coal during the first two months of the current fiscal year, which began on April 1, 2019, up 1 per cent from the same period a year ago, while coking coal shipments went up by a significant 15.4 per cent year-on-year to 9.96 mt, according to the latest data released by Indian Ports Association (IPA), says a report.

While Paradip Port on the east coast handled the highest volume of thermal coal shipments during April-May 2019 at 5.48 mt, down 4.8 per cent year-on-year, Kolkata Port, also on the east coast, received the most coking coal shipments at 3.32 mt, up 28.6 per cent year-on-year, the report said.
