India Maritime Human Resources Summit

The International Maritime Organization has designated 2010 as the Year of the Seafarer and the time is right to discuss seafaring as a rewarding career and motivate youth to ‘Go to Sea’. The IMO campaign is keen to improve the image of shipping and promote seafaring as an adventurous career. For this to happen, there is a need for the industry to provide fundamental information and valued insights to the youth to help them make informed and intelligent decisions

Human Resources SummitIndia Maritime Human Resources Summit will do just that. It will bring together the industry, the institutions and the aspirants to spread the IMO message and raise awareness of seafaring as an exciting and rewarding career option. Industry players, experts, both national and international, and government representatives will share their working knowledge and information with the aspiring youth and demystify myths, if any, in the process.

There is a huge divide, both now and in the near future, between the demand and supply of officer-level entrants in shipping. It is time to rise to the alert and beckon youth to go places!

Structure
The day-long summit will have three presentation sessions on a specific theme followed by a panel discussion.

Inaugural session
The International Maritime Organization, the Human Resource Ministry, the Shipping Ministry and the Industry will be invited to initiate the day’s proceedings.

SESSION I: Go to Sea
As shipping aids the growth of economies around the globe, there is a need to inform youth about the merits of a career at sea. In the wake of seafarers’ issues such as criminalisation, piracy and stringent norms, the seafarer career and the image of shipping needs an overhaul.

There is also need to promote shipping as a career. This session will discuss the place of a seafarer in the growing economic order, attractions and excitement in the career, is the career profitable and secure and the changing role/responsibility of a seafarer.

SESSION II: Maritime Education in India and abroad
The shipping industry has professionals working both on the sea and the shore and in various verticals. There is a need to showcase various career avenues and educational opportunities in India and abroad to present a holistic picture for aspiring professionals.

This session will discuss what encompasses seafaring career and training encompass, how does one enter the profession – the entry requirements and the examination system, the study options in India and abroad, the funding options and the opportunities open for women aspirants.

SESSION III: Quality of Education
A maritime career in ports, shipping and logistics involves both theoretical and practical training. While there are nearly 155 institutes in India, there is a need to uphold global standards to produce cadets of international caliber. Given this need, it is apt to discuss the present quality standards being followed by these institutes, the quality gap between the requirement and the supply of personnel to the industry and also the role of regulatory bodies in furthering the cause of quality maritime education.

The Gateway Awards for Excellence in Maritime Education
Maritime education has been playing a key role in producing skilled personnel and preparing them for hands-on careers in shipping. It is therefore appropriate to recognise the institutions and people driving the cause of maritime education in India and to boost the competitive spirit. Gateway Knowledge Forum looks forward to awarding the best in the field of maritime education every year. The awards could be given away in the following categories:

  • Award of Academic Excellence (to be given to an institution)
  • Award for Best Infrastructure (to be given to an institution)
  • Best Maritime Employer of the Year Award (to be given to a shipping line/port)
  • Outstanding Seafarer of the Year Award (to be given to a Seafarer)
  • Lifetime Achievement Award (to be given to an individual who has dedicated his her lifetime for the cause of maritime education)

This session will discuss the quality of education in maritime institutes, the need for improving pre-sea training, a collaborated approach by the industry and the role of IMU in upholding maritime education.
PANEL DISCUSSION: Building Human Resources for Maritime Sector With changing times, the professional demands and needs of maritime personnel, governments and the industry change periodically. To support a holistic growth, there is a need to build the right kind of human resources for the industry, review the government’s training incentives and support and its collaboration with the industry in facilitating the growth of skilled workforce.

This session will discuss the demand-supply estimate of personnel, the opportunities available in port management, shipping & logistics, the government regulations and the role of the industry and governments in promoting healthy seafaring.
