JICA to enhance efficiency at Chennai Port

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has commissioned a second study at the Chennai port to enhance the port’s operational efficiency, according to P Raveendran, Chairman, Chennai Port Trust. If required, they will suggest modernisation of the port facility, upgrade the information technology system and undertake a traffic survey, Raveendran revealed.

Objectives
JICA is undertaking port modernisation because of its involvement in Chennai-Bengaluru Industrial Corridor, and the presence of a large number of Japanese companies in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The agency completed the first phase of Technical Cooperation modality to ChPT to improve efficiency of port operations with focus on easing traffic congestion at port gates by regular observation of traffic and processing time at port gates.

Demonstration trials for simplification of the procedure at gates, restriction of parking on internal roads and implementation of web portal system for sharing information related to traffic congestion and barcode reading and RFID System were done.

Second phase
Now, JICA is undertaking the second phase to enhance the port’s operational efficiency by reducing container movement lead times.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
