Tamil Nadu has got a large share of port-rail connectivity projects under the Sagarmala programme. Out of the total Rs.4,863 crore to be spent under the project, Rs.955 crore will be spent at major ports in the State, the Minister of State for Shipping Pon Radhakrishnan told the Lok Sabha recently.

At present, a total of 22 port-rail connectivity projects are being undertaken by Indian Port Rail Corporation Ltd to provide last-mile connectivity to major ports. Out of these projects, work has begun on five.

Major projects

Many port-rail connectivity projects have been identified as part of the National Perspective Plan, April 2016, under the Sagarmala programme, including development of heavy haul rail line from Ib Valley/Talcher to Paradip at a cost of nearly Rs.3,000 crore. The project will help in transportation of thermal coal from Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) to various coastal power plants in southern India via coastal shipping.

In Tamil Nadu, at Chennai port, work has commenced to lay a new rail track to the west of western yard one and provide paving block platform in between new track and western yard one.

A detailed project report (DPR) is ready for the Northern rail link from Minjur station to Kamarajar port at Ennore. At VOC Port in Tuticorin, a DRP and finance modelling are under finalisation to provide rail connectivity from the port to power plants.

For the upcoming Enayam port in Kanyakumari district, a DRP is under preparation to provide rail/road connectivity for the port, the minister said.

Funding to execute the port-rail connectivity projects is to be provided by respective ports or by the project specific special purpose vehicles.
