[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Three Modern Ports of which two of them for captive use of the industry are coming up in Northern Tamil Nadu which will spur industrial growth in the region besides providing steady flow of coal to the thermal plants, according to Official sources. The Puduchery Port is being revived with assistance from Chennai Port to handle container traffic in a limited way.

Final touches are being given to setting up of a modern Trestle Jetty at Silambiamangalam about fifty kilometers South of Cuddalore to exclusively cater to the requirement of Cement major Ramco Industries. The port will import coal for their cement plant and export cement to Eastern parts of the Country through this jetty.

A road to a length of 1.5 kilometers will be constructed on the sea and at the end of it will be the Trestle Jetty which will handle ships upto 75,000 dwt capacity requiring a draft of 16 meters. The jetty will cater to the requirements of the Ramco’s cement plant at Ariyalur.

Tamil Nadu Maritime Board is all set to delineate the port’s boundaries in a short period and environment clearance for the project from Centre and State is expected within six months. The Trestle jetty is expected to be commissioned in two years time.

Construction work is expected to commence shortly for setting up a deepwater port being set up by Mumbai based ILFS at Parangipet near Cuddalore to meet the coal requirements of 1300 MW thermal plant being put up by this group.

ILFS plans to implement the project in two phases. Meanwhile the State Government has forwarded to the Shipping Ministry the Detailed Project Report to set up two Multi Cargo berths at the New Cuddalore Port. The project includes construction of a 300 meter long general cargo berth at a depth of nine meters at a cost of Rs 150 crores, the cost being shared equally by the Centre and the Tamil Nadu Government. Deep draft berths are not possible in the Port since it has hardly 100 acres of land in its possession.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
