The 75thIndependence Day has been celebrated by V.O.Chidambaranar Port Trust in a grand manner at Port’s School ground at 0900 hrs. on 15.08.2021

The celebrations to mark the 75th Independence Day of India commenced with the hoisting of the National Flag by Shri T.K. Ramachandran, IAS., Chairman,V.O. Chidambaranar Port Trust. Thereafter, he took salute from CISF.

Shri T.K. Ramachandran, IAS, Chairman, in his address, recalled the sacrifices made by our freedom fighters and expressed India’s commitment to work towards realizing the objectives of ‘Aatma Nirbhar Bharat’, in making India self-reliant and a global hub of manufacturing and services.

He stated that in-spite of tough times faced by global maritime trade due to the rippling effect caused by Covid-19 pandemic in the form of shortage of containers, increase in ocean freight and drop in overall merchandise trade, VOC Port has handled 11.33 Million Tonnes and 2.68 TEUs of Containers during this financial year upto July 2021, registering a growth of 7.14 %, when compared to corresponding period of last year.

He also stated that VOC Port is proactively working towards achieving ‘Aatma Nirbhar Bharat’ initiatives of Government of India by promoting Port-led industries by implementing Tuticorin-SPEEDZ, an initiative providing 2000 acres of land for establishing Port base industries, Ease of Doing Business like Direct Port Entry and Direct Port Delivery of containers, infrastructure development by conversion of Berth No.9 as Container Terminal, Mechanisation of NCB-3 & widening of Port’ Entrance channel and usage of Information Technology by facilitating 100% faceless online EXIM documents, assessment of charges, issue of licenses and payment gateway. The port has also set up a business development council.

He also stated that considering the increased handling of windmill blades, the Port has proposed to extend all support to this  activity including allocation of additional land.

He highlighted the important CSR activities carried out by the port during this period, specially those  related to COVID relief measures.

All the Officers and Staff who rendered meritorious service during this ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic were presented with certificates & awards.  In view of the COVID-19 pandemic, preventive measures such as maintaining social distancing, wearing of masks and proper sanitization of the venue, as prescribed and recommended by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare & such guidelines issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India were strictly adhered during the entire event.
