The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has reported a 3.5% year-on-year increase in air freight movement, signalling steady expansion in the country’s air cargo operations. The growth reflects rising demand for time-sensitive cargo solutions from both domestic and international shippers, as trade volumes continue to recover and diversify.
Key cargo hubs such as Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai were among the largest contributors to the uptick in volumes, underscoring the central role of metro airports in India’s air logistics network. Industry stakeholders point to sectors like pharmaceuticals, e-commerce and perishables as major drivers of this cargo growth, given their reliance on reliable and fast air connectivity.
AAI officials highlight that ongoing investments in cargo infrastructure, digitalisation and process optimisation at airports are helping to enhance handling efficiency and reduce turnaround times for exporters and importers. With air freight movement on a firm upward trajectory, India’s aviation and logistics ecosystem is expected to gain further strength through improved connectivity and deeper integration with global supply chains.
