The Alabama Port Authority has ordered two Rubber-Tyred Gantry (RTG) cranes from Konecranes to serve its upcoming Montgomery Intermodal Container Transfer Facility (ICTF). The order, placed in Q3 2025, is scheduled for delivery in Q4 2026.

Container volumes at the Port of Mobile have been steadily rising, climbing from about 502,000 TEUs in 2021 to more than 563,000 TEUs in 2023. To accommodate this growth, the ICTF in Montgomery is being developed as a critical hub to link maritime cargo with inland rail and road networks.

The new RTGs will anchor container-handling operations at the facility, enabling fast and precise transfers between modes of transport. Each crane is equipped with Active Load Control to minimize sway, along with a full suite of Konecranes Smart Features. These include Auto-Steering, Auto-Positioning, and Auto-TOS Reporting for seamless integration with the terminal operating system, as well as Stack Collision Prevention, Auto Path Optimizing, and Auto-Truck Guiding to boost safety and efficiency.

This marks the port authority’s first deployment of Konecranes RTGs, extending a partnership that began in 2001 with the purchase of a Konecranes Gottwald Mobile Harbour Crane—still in active service today for both containerized and breakbulk cargo.

The announcement follows recent global demand for Konecranes technology, including an order from the Port of Cartagena for 25 RTGs and retrofits to enable supervised operations on 10 existing cranes.
