AM/NS India arm wins 30-year concession to mechanise Paradip Port berth

AMNS Paradip Logistics will develop a 10 MTPA fully mechanised berth at CQ-III to move iron ore pellets from the company’s Odisha pellet plant to its Hazira steel facility through coastal shipping.

AMNS Paradip Logistics Private Limited (APLPL), a special purpose vehicle of ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India), has been granted the award of concession by the Paradip Port Authority (PPA) for the mechanisation and operation of the CQ-III berth on a captive basis, the company said in a statement on Thursday.

The 30-year concession involves handling dry bulk cargo with an annual capacity of 10 million tonnes per annum. Union Minister for Ports, Shipping & Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal presented the award to Deepak Arora, Chief – Corporate Affairs, AM/NS India, at an event in Paradeep, Odisha. Under the agreement, APLPL will construct a fully mechanised conveyor system directly connecting AM/NS India’s pellet plant complex to the CQ-III berth at Paradip Port.

The arrangement will facilitate the coastal transportation of iron ore pellets from Paradeep to the steelmaker’s flagship manufacturing facility in Hazira, Gujarat. The company said the captive use of CQ-III berth will not only support AM/NS India’s long-term growth but also serve as a vital link in its robust and eco-friendly supply chain pipeline.

The company further stated that the project aligns with the Centre’s policy to promote coastal shipping as a fuel-efficient, economical and lower-emission mode of freight movement compared to overland rail or road transport.

The event was attended by Sampad Chandra Swain, Minister of State (IC) for Industries, Odisha; Bibhu Prasad Tarai, MP, Jagatsinghpur; P L Haranadh, Chairman, Paradip Port Authority; and U S R Raju, Head – Odisha Operations, AM/NS India.

MSC to set up seafarer training academy in Mumbai as India eyes global demand for skilled seafarers

Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has agreed to set up a major seafarer training academy in Mumbai, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said during his visit to Japan, as he called for similar partnerships with Japanese shipping companies and training institutes.

Goyal pointed to India’s nearly 250,000 seafarers currently serving on ships worldwide, describing them as “hardworking,” “skilled” and “talented.” He said MSC alone had indicated capacity to absorb workers at a scale reflecting massive global demand for Indian seafarers, and called for similar collaborations with Japanese shipping companies and training institutes to build on this momentum.

Goyal said such collaborations spanning semiconductors, human resources, food processing and shipping represented significant opportunities for Japanese companies to participate in India’s growth story in the years ahead.

The announcement comes as India continues to expand its maritime skill development ecosystem. The Directorate General of Shipping has approved 171 Maritime Training Institutes across the country, with employment opportunities for seafarers on Indian and foreign ships tied to training, assessment and certification in line with the International Maritime Organization’s STCW Convention. Under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana, candidates are also being trained in various logistics and maritime-related job roles as part of the government’s broader push to prepare India’s workforce for opportunities in the sector.
