The government has initiated moves to include the development of the Azhikkal port, Kannur, in the Sagarmala scheme. Efforts are on to provide connectivity to the Azhikkal port under the Bharat Mala project of the Central government. Land acquisition had been expedited for a 2-km railway corridor between Azhikkal and Valapattanam. Construction of a 226-m-long wharf and installation of a crane at the port had been completed.
