Bangladesh has restarted onion imports from India after a five-and-a-half-month pause, seeking to stabilise soaring domestic prices. On Monday, the first shipment of 150 tonnes arrived via Hili Land Port in Dinajpur, followed by 660 tonnes carried in 23 trucks through Sonamasjid Land Port in Chapainawabganj later in the day.
The last consignment through Hili was on March 2, when only 29 tonnes were imported. Imports were halted thereafter as local prices eased, reducing the need for Indian supplies. With prices climbing again, Bangladeshi traders secured fresh approval from the Ministry of Agriculture to resume shipments.
