Construction of the Bhogapuram International Airport in Andhra Pradesh is progressing ahead of schedule, with nearly 92% of the work already completed, Union Minister for Civil Aviation K. Rammohan Naidu announced during a site inspection.
Addressing the media after reviewing the ongoing works, the Minister said that 91.7% of construction has been finished, and the first test flight is expected to take place in December 2025 or January 2026. He noted that both the State government and the Centre are prioritising the project, with parallel efforts underway to complete connectivity, navigation, and aviation infrastructure.
Naidu added that the new airport is poised to become a major growth catalyst for northern Andhra Pradesh. Economic activity in the region has already begun to accelerate, with several hospitality groups planning five-star hotel projects near the airport.
He also highlighted Visakhapatnam’s rapid emergence as an Artificial Intelligence hub, stressing that the upcoming airport will play a critical role in supporting the city’s evolving industrial and technology ecosystem.
The project is being developed by GMR Visakhapatnam International Airport Limited (GVIAL), a subsidiary of GMR Airports Limited, under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. The greenfield airport, located in Bhogapuram in Vizianagaram district, will have an initial handling capacity of six million passengers annually, with provisions for future expansion.
