BIMCO and the International Chamber of Shipping have warned that the global shipping industry could face a significant shortage of certified officers in the coming years. The report says training, recruitment, and retention must improve to keep pace with rising demand across the world fleet.
The latest Seafarer Workforce Report says the industry needs a larger pipeline of officers to support a fleet of more than 74,000 vessels and a workforce of about 1.89 million seafarers. It also highlights that demand for officers has grown faster than supply, creating pressure on safe and efficient ship operations.
The report points to particular gaps in technical and management-level roles, especially in sectors such as tankers and offshore shipping. It also says the industry must strengthen maritime education and promote careers at sea to attract and retain more officers.
According to the report, the shortage is being driven not only by fleet growth but also by increasing crew requirements per vessel and the rising complexity of modern ships. BIMCO and ICS say the situation could worsen without coordinated action from shipping companies, training institutions, and maritime administrations.
