Blue Dart Express has appointed R S Subramanian, current Managing Director of DHL Express India, as its next managing director, marking a significant leadership transition at one of India’s largest express logistics companies.

When will Subramanian take charge and for how long?

Subramanian will assume the role from November 30, 2026, subject to shareholder approval and other applicable statutory clearances. He will serve as managing director until May 25, 2030. The appointment was approved during Blue Dart’s board meeting on September 15, following a board-approved succession plan.

What is Subramanian’s current role and connection to Blue Dart?

Subramanian currently serves as Senior Vice President, South Asia, and Managing Director of DHL Express India, and is also a member of the DHL Express Asia Pacific Management Board. He is not entirely new to Blue Dart’s boardroom, having served as a non-executive director on the company’s board since March 2019, giving him direct exposure to its operations and strategic priorities ahead of taking the top executive role.

What experience does Subramanian bring to the position?

Subramanian brings more than 30 years of experience across product-led and service industries, spanning business strategy, customer management, marketing and organisational development. He joined DHL Express India as Head of Sales before moving into broader regional leadership responsibilities, later serving as Vice President for the South Asia cluster overseeing operations across Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Maldives and Bhutan. He became Managing Director of DHL Express India in 2010, a tenure during which the company expanded its infrastructure footprint, technology capabilities and people processes. Prior to DHL, he spent 14 years at Hindustan Unilever across sales, marketing and export management roles. He holds a degree in Industrial Engineering and a master’s degree in management from IIM Bangalore.

What industry roles does Subramanian hold beyond his corporate positions?

Subramanian currently serves as Vice Chairman of the Express Industry Council of India and is a member of the Advisory Council of the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce, giving him broader visibility into industry advocacy and cross-border logistics policy issues relevant to Blue Dart’s operations.

What happens to outgoing managing director Balfour Manuel?

Balfour Manuel, who has spent 43 years with Blue Dart, will step down as managing director at the close of business on November 29, 2026. The company’s board and Nomination and Remuneration Committee have approved a waiver of his six-month notice period. Following his departure from the managing director role, Manuel will serve as Senior Strategic Adviser to the Managing Director until May 15, 2027. The company said Manuel cited the need to facilitate a smooth succession process and fulfil certain personal commitments as reasons for opting for early superannuation. He will also cease to be a director of Blue Dart Aviation, the company’s wholly owned subsidiary, from November 29.

What does this transition mean for Blue Dart going forward?

The appointment reflects a structured succession process at Blue Dart, with the incoming leader already familiar with the company’s board and operating environment. As Subramanian prepares to take charge later this year, the company will be led by an executive with decades of experience across logistics, regional operations and business leadership, while Manuel’s advisory role is expected to support continuity during the handover period.
