The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved three multi-tracking railway projects worth ₹9,072 crore, expanding the network by 307 km across eight districts in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand.
Key initiatives include doubling the Gondia-Jabalpur section, adding third and fourth lines on Punarakh-Kiul, and Gamharia-Chandil routes, easing congestion on critical freight corridors for coal, iron ore, cement, and foodgrains.
These upgrades will boost annual freight capacity by 52 MTPA, connect 5,407 villages serving 98 lakh people, and improve multi-modal logistics under PM Gati Shakti, enhancing supply chains to ports like JNPT, Visakhapatnam, and Paradip.
The projects align with Maritime India Vision 2030 by streamlining cargo evacuation from mining regions to coastal hubs, generating jobs and fostering regional self-reliance. They position Indian Railways as a backbone for efficient national trade flows.
