Bangladesh’s long-awaited Bay Terminal project at Chattogram Port is slated to become operational by 2030, according to Rear Admiral SM Moniruzzaman, Chairman of the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA). Once completed, the terminal is expected to drastically cut vessel waiting times and significantly expand the nation’s export handling capacity.
Design and preparatory phases for the massive maritime infrastructure project are in their final stages. The government and CPA have already initiated talks with several domestic and international contractors to move the construction forward.
The Bay Terminal will feature a breakwater, navigation channel, road and rail connectivity, container yards, jetties, and a range of modern service facilities to accommodate larger vessels and enhance operational efficiency.
According to CPA officials, the Bay Terminal Marine Infrastructure Development Project (BTMIDP) will be implemented between April 2025 and June 2031 at the Anandabazar area in North Halishahar, Chattogram.
Once fully operational, the terminal is projected to handle around 6 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) annually — nearly twice the current capacity of Chattogram Port.
The announcement was made during a conference attended by potential contractors, port users, engineers, and representatives from the Planning Commission. Participants highlighted that the Bay Terminal would transform Bangladesh into a key logistics hub for regional trade, reinforcing Chattogram Port’s historic role as the country’s maritime gateway and positioning it for a new era of global competitiveness.
