Due to opposition from truck drivers about the payment of associated fees, the Chennai Port Authority (ChPA) has postponed the operationalization of the Chennai Port Parking Plaza (CPP) for the third time. The fee was originally scheduled to be implemented by the authority in February 2025, but it was postponed until April and then to May.

Its implementation date of May 21 has now been postponed as well. This comes after truckers said they couldn’t afford to pay the new tariffs and planned to go on strike on May 20. Commercial vehicles such as trailers, tankers, and semi-articulated trucks having an overall length of 40 feet or more will not be taxed for the first 15 minutes under the new rate.

CVs up to 40 feet in length will be charged ₹50, and those beyond 40 feet will be charged ₹75, for parking for 15 minutes to 4 hours. Parking rates are ₹75 for CVs up to 40 feet in length and ₹100 for CVs above 40 feet. If parking is required for more than 24 hours, the fee is either ₹75 or ₹100.

In a trade notice published on May 14, the ChPA stated that any vehicle parked alongside port roads, at an unauthorized location within the port, or in front of the container terminals because the necessary documentation is not available or because the trailer is waiting for return cargo (double transaction) will be considered to have been parked without authorization. The trailer will be blacklisted and subject to a penalty of ₹1,180, including GST.

A contractor is responsible for operating the yard, which requires the deployment of personnel and other equipment. CPPP was created at an approximate cost of ₹45 crore. There is a parking cost for these. There are about 600 automobiles that can fit in the CPPP.
