Chennai Port Authority has crossed 50 million metric tonnes (MMT) of cargo throughput in FY 2025–26, reaching the milestone in mid-February—around 18 days earlier than last year, underscoring stronger volumes and sharper operational efficiency.

The 50 MMT mark was achieved on February 11–12, 2026, compared with March 1 in FY 2024–25.

Of the 50 MMT handled so far, containers contributed about 32.27 MMT, crude 13 MMT, fertilizers roughly 0.36 MMT, and other cargo 4.36 MMT.

Container traffic reached 1.67 million TEUs up to February 11, surpassing last year’s 1.56 million TEUs and reflecting a growth of just over 7 per cent.

Port officials attribute the early achievement to improved berth productivity, better asset utilization, and closer coordination with shipping lines, terminal operators, and logistics stakeholders. This performance comes despite intense competition from neighbouring major and private ports on the east coast, reinforcing Chennai’s position as a key gateway for southern India’s manufacturing and consumption hubs.

With over a month left in the fiscal, Chennai Port is on track to close FY 2025–26 with a solid uptick in cargo volumes, supporting India’s broader port-led growth and logistics competitiveness agenda.
