CMA CGM’s Fiordland has become the first large container vessel to call at Puerto Antioquia, Colombia’s newly operational multipurpose port in the Gulf of Urabá, Turbo, Antioquia.
This milestone underscores the port’s readiness to handle post-Panamax ships, enhancing Latin America’s container logistics networks with implications for transshipment routes potentially benefiting Indian exporters via Panama Canal links.
Puerto Antioquia, operational since early February 2026, features a 1,340-meter quay, 16.5-meter draft, and capacity for New Panamax vessels up to 14,000 TEU, positioning it closer to Colombia’s production hubs than traditional Caribbean ports.
The Fiordland, a 10,888 TEU vessel, docked successfully, validating the terminal’s advanced gantry cranes, viaduct system, and automated cargo handling for containers, bulk, and Ro-Ro traffic.
Located 350 km nearer to Medellín and coffee regions, the port cuts transit times by up to 47%, streamlining exports like bananas and imports, while boosting efficiency for Asia-Europe routes via the Panama Canal.
For India’s maritime sector, Puerto Antioquia opens optimized pathways for bilateral trade with Colombia, supporting faster container flows from Mumbai and Chennai to South American markets.
