Container shipping major CMA CGM has announced the introduction of a Peak Season Surcharge (PSS) on westbound cargo moving from Asia to Northern Europe, effective from December 29, 2025.
The surcharge will apply to cargo loaded at all Asian origin ports, including Japan, Southeast Asia and Bangladesh, and discharged at ports across Northern Europe. The destination scope covers the UK as well as ports spanning from Portugal through to Finland and Estonia.
According to the company, the PSS will be levied on all cargo categories, including dry cargo, out-of-gauge (OOG) shipments, paying empty containers and refrigerated cargo.
CMA CGM said the surcharge will come into effect based on the date of loading at origin ports and will remain in force until further notice. The rate has been set at USD 250 per TEU.
The PSS will be applicable to all freight agreements with a validity period exceeding 30 days. The move, the carrier said, is aimed at maintaining service reliability and operational efficiency during peak demand conditions on the Asia–North Europe trade lane.
