Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) has begun building a next-generation hybrid electric Service Operation Vessel (SOV) for UK-based North Star Shipping (Aberdeen) Ltd, marking another step in its growing portfolio of vessels for the offshore renewable energy sector.
The keel-laying ceremony was carried out by Michael Reid, Head of Special Projects at North Star Shipping. The vessel—an 85-metre battery-electric hybrid SOV—has been designed in partnership with Norway’s Vard AS and is the second in a two-vessel series being constructed by CSL for the UK operator. Each vessel carries a construction cost of around ₹500 crore.
The advanced SOV will feature a lithium-ion battery-powered hybrid propulsion system, a DC-based power architecture, and electric azimuth thrusters for precise manoeuvring. It will also be equipped with a modern walk-to-work gangway, enabling safe crew transfers and efficient service operations around offshore wind installations.
Once delivered, the vessel will support a wide range of functions—including maintenance, logistics support and accommodation—for offshore wind farms, contributing to safer and more efficient operations in demanding marine environments.
CSL said the keel-laying marks an important milestone in its enduring partnership with North Star Shipping and reflects a mutual commitment to innovation, sustainability and excellence in the offshore renewable vessel market.
