Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) has announced a top-level leadership transition with the retirement of Chairman and Managing Director Madhu Sankunny Nair on January 31, 2026, upon superannuation. Nair, who took charge as CMD in 2016, is widely credited with steering the state-owned yard through a crucial growth phase, spanning both defence and commercial shipbuilding, including the completion of major milestones on India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier.
Following his exit, Director (Finance) Jose V J has been given additional charge as Chairman and Managing Director for a period of three months starting February 1, 2026, or until a new full-time chief is appointed, whichever is earlier. The appointment was conveyed through a communication from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways dated January 28, 2026, and has been formally notified to BSE and the National Stock Exchange as part of CSL’s regulatory disclosures.
Nair’s tenure is seen as a turning point for Cochin Shipyard, breaking a long line of naval officers at the helm and bringing in a commercial shipbuilding perspective at a time when the yard was diversifying its order book. Under his leadership, CSL executed complex naval projects for the Indian Navy and Coast Guard while also pursuing export and commercial opportunities, positioning the yard as a key player in India’s broader maritime manufacturing push. With the interim arrangement now in place under Jose V J, the shipyard enters a short transition phase as the government moves to identify and appoint a new CMD to guide its next phase of growth.
