Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) has commenced construction of a hybrid Service Operation Vessel (SOV) for UK-based North Star Shipping (Aberdeen) Limited, marking a significant step in supporting the offshore renewable energy sector.
The keel-laying ceremony was officiated by James Bradford, Chief Technology Officer at North Star Shipping, in the presence of Michael Reid, Head of Special Projects at North Star, along with CSL’s senior management, including Jose V J (Director – Finance), Harikrishnan S. (Executive Director – Shipbuilding), and Rajesh Gopalakrishnan (Executive Director – Ship Repair).
The 68-metre hybrid-electric SOV, designed in collaboration with VARD AS, Norway, is the first of two vessels CSL is building for North Star. Classified by DNV, the ship will be powered by a hybrid electric system with lithium-ion batteries, feature electric cycloidal propulsion for high manoeuvrability, and be equipped with a walk-to-work gangway system to ensure safe personnel transfers in offshore environments.
Purpose-built for offshore wind operations, the vessel will combine accommodation, logistics, and maintenance capabilities, with space for 54 personnel including technicians and crew. Dedicated facilities for wind turbine servicing are designed to enhance safety, efficiency, and sustainability in offshore operations.
Once delivered, the advanced SOV is expected to play a pivotal role in supporting renewable energy projects in the UK and beyond, reinforcing both CSL’s global shipbuilding credentials and North Star Shipping’s commitment to greener maritime solutions.
