Cochin Shipyard, Synergy Marine tie up for shipbuilding and repair projects

Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) and Singapore-based Synergy Marine Group have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to jointly pursue shipbuilding, ship repair and vessel conversion projects in India.

The MoU was signed by Ajay Chaudhry, Co-CEO Ship Management of Synergy Marine Group, and Rajesh Gopalakrishnan, Director (Technical) of CSL, in the presence of Jesper Kristensen, Group CEO of Synergy Marine Group, and Jose V J, Chairman and Managing Director of CSL.

The agreement provides a framework to combine CSL’s industrial capabilities with Synergy Marine’s experience in owners’ representation, engineering, project management and long-term technical management across shipbuilding and ship repair. The collaboration will cover joint business development in ship repair, conversion, newbuilding, module fabrication and oil and gas projects.

The two companies will also explore mutually agreed technical and strategic advisory support for CSL’s newbuilding activities, including project planning, execution and quality assurance, with potential opportunities to be assessed based on client requirements and the suitability of the Indian yard’s facilities.

Synergy Marine has supported the delivery of more than 250 newbuilding projects, with its current portfolio covering more than 150 vessels under construction at 20 shipyards across six countries. The group manages more than 750 vessels across segments including bulk carriers, container ships, oil and chemical tankers, gas carriers, and floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs), and also has experience converting LNG carriers into FSRUs, along with engineering work for floating storage and LNG bunkering projects.

Jesper Kristensen said a vessel’s long-term performance is shaped well before it enters service, adding that combining Synergy’s experience with CSL’s industrial capabilities would provide a platform to develop shipbuilding and conversion opportunities in India, with a focus on safety, reliability and total cost of ownership.

Collaboration to support complex maritime projects

Cochin Shipyard, a Government of India enterprise under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, undertakes both commercial and defence shipbuilding and repair projects for customers in India and overseas.

The collaboration is aligned with India’s long-term maritime growth ambitions under the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, and is expected to support CSL’s efforts to pursue technically demanding projects for international customers by combining shipyard infrastructure with engineering, project management and technical expertise.
