The Commerce Ministry will hold a series of consultations with exporters this week as part of its drive to broaden India’s export basket and expand its footprint in global markets.
The meetings, slated over the next two to three days, will include industry representatives from key sectors such as chemicals, gems and jewellery, and textiles. Discussions are expected to focus on strategies to reduce dependence on a limited set of products and destinations, while identifying opportunities in new geographies.
The initiative comes as the government steps up work on its proposed Export Promotion Mission, aimed at providing targeted support and market intelligence to exporters. As part of the plan, India will launch outreach programmes in 40 countries, with priority markets in Europe including the UK, Spain, Germany and Italy. Activities will range from trade fairs and buyer–seller meets to sector-specific promotional campaigns.
India’s merchandise exports are currently under strain due to global geopolitical tensions and volatile commodity prices. The pressure has been compounded by the United States’ decision to impose a 50% tariff on Indian imports starting Wednesday, including a 25% punitive duty linked to New Delhi’s purchases of Russian oil.
