Container Corporation of India (CONCOR) has marked back-to-back milestones in rail-based freight logistics this week, flagging off both its first-ever dedicated Sugar Express train service and the inaugural export container block train from its newly commissioned Multi-Modal Logistics Park (MMLP) at Barhi — two developments that reinforce the growing role of dedicated rail corridors in India’s domestic and export supply chains.
The Sugar Express, comprising a dedicated rake of 80 twenty-foot domestic containers, has been dispatched from CONCOR’s Inland Container Depot (ICD) in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, to Shalimar terminal in Kolkata. The service has been executed in collaboration with Avadh Sugar and Energy Ltd., Triveni Engineering and Industries Ltd., and M/s Prakash Bhalotia and Brothers, with CONCOR providing end-to-end logistics support including first-mile and last-mile connectivity.
Sugar Express: A New Paradigm for Bulk Agricultural Rail Logistics
The Sugar Express represents a significant innovation in the movement of agricultural bulk commodities by rail. Sugar — a high-volume, price-sensitive commodity produced in large quantities in Uttar Pradesh and shipped in bulk to eastern India and ports — has historically been moved primarily by road or conventional rail wagons. A dedicated containerised rail service with end-to-end logistics management introduces a level of reliability, traceability, and supply chain integration that was previously unavailable for this cargo category.
For UP’s sugar industry — which faces persistent challenges of market access, transportation costs, and spoilage — the Sugar Express offers a faster and more dependable route to Bengal’s consumption centres and Kolkata’s export infrastructure. The model, if commercially successful, could be replicated for other agricultural commodities including rice, wheat, and pulses.
Barhi MMLP’s First Export Block Train to Mundra
The second milestone is the flagging off of the first export container block train from CONCOR’s MMLP at Barhi in Jharkhand to Mundra Port in Gujarat — India’s largest commercial port. The inaugural train is carrying rice consignments for Emirates Shipping Line, arranged in association with CAG Shipping. The Barhi-Mundra rail corridor, once operational at scale, offers one of India’s most efficient pathways for moving eastern India’s agricultural exports to the west coast gateway.
CONCOR’s MMLP at Barhi is one of a network of multimodal logistics parks being developed under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, designed to integrate road, rail, and warehousing at strategic inland locations. Its first export block train to Mundra is not only a commercial milestone for the facility but a proof-of-concept for the MMLP model’s ability to drive export logistics efficiency for India’s agricultural sector.
Rail Logistics as a Crisis Response Tool
The timing of both CONCOR initiatives is also significant in the context of the ongoing Hormuz crisis. With sea freight disruptions pushing exporters to seek reliable alternative supply chain solutions, dedicated rail services that offer predictable transit times and lower handling costs from inland origins to major gateway ports are gaining fresh strategic importance. CONCOR’s simultaneous relief measures — including extended free ICD storage and reefer discounts — combine with these new rail services to position the state logistics major as a central pillar of India’s export resilience strategy during the current disruption.
