In a landmark move toward sustainable freight transport, the Container Corporation of India Ltd. (CONCOR) has entered into a strategic partnership with UltraTech Cement Ltd., the country’s largest cement manufacturer, to transport bulk cement through specialized rail containers. The collaboration marks India’s first large-scale initiative to shift cement logistics from road to rail.

Under the agreement, CONCOR—a Navratna PSU under the Ministry of Railways—will operate dedicated rakes for cement movement across key industrial corridors, creating a logistics system that is more reliable, energy-efficient, and environmentally responsible.

By integrating UltraTech’s extensive production and distribution network with CONCOR’s multimodal logistics expertise and the Indian Railways’ national infrastructure, the initiative aims to reduce road congestion, fuel consumption, and carbon emissions while improving supply chain predictability and cost efficiency.

The agreement was signed in New Delhi in the presence of K.C. Jhanwar, Managing Director of UltraTech Cement, and Sanjay Swarup, Chairman and Managing Director of CONCOR. Industry observers say the model could pave the way for similar green logistics collaborations in sectors like steel, fertilizers, and petroleum, supporting India’s long-term vision of decarbonizing its freight ecosystem and advancing the goals of the National Logistics Policy.
