November 02, 2020: The first nine months of 2020 have been highly positive for the Port of Salalah’s container business, with throughput rising 8% to 3.22 million teu, compared to 2.99 million teu in the first three quarters of 2019.

Most of the increase occurred in the first quarter of this year and reflects the fact that in early 2019 volumes were still affected by the impact of Cyclone Mekunu the year before. Since then the port says it has seen a ‘moderate’ impact from Covid-19 related developments.

Salalah’s general cargo business has however been adversely affected by reduced throughput of gypsum and limestone as a result of regional lockdown measures. The 10.84 million tonnes handled was 5% less than the 11.47 million tonnes recorded in the first nine months of 2019.
