Container trade in South and East India is dominated by Vizhinjam Port

The Vizhinjam port became number one in the south and east in terms of the number of containers handled. In the west, Mumbai and Mundra are the biggest ports, but Vizhinjam is catching up because of its location and efficiency.

Automatic handling of the containers was one of the reasons the port was able to handle so many containers in the first phase. The port is yet to be completed, but still, it would be able to handle a lot of containers. That’s a significant achievement compared to the other ports.  The port’s capacity was one million in phase one but each month it is handling above designated capacity, according to the port sources. The port handled around 1 lakh containers last month. The number is scheduled to go up in coming months.
