COSCO Shipping Development delivers specialised containers to Tibet Plateau

COSCO SHIPPING Development Co., Ltd. has completed a challenging 4,000-kilometer overland journey to deliver 16 specially built steel containers to the Tibet Plateau, where they are being repurposed as public service and educational facilities. This is the second year in a row the company has carried out such a community-focused initiative in the region. The project, managed by the company’s Jinzhou Container Factory, involved one of the most difficult transport operations in the world. To withstand the plateau’s extreme climate, the containers were reinforced with thick steel and advanced insulation. Once in Tibet, they were allocated to two main uses:

• Tourism Facilities: Some containers have been converted into cultural and tourism service stations along the national highway. Each station, designed with ethnic-inspired architecture, uses four repurposed containers and offers traveler services, information counters, and displays of local cultural products. Sustainability features such as solar panels, battery expansion units, and ventilated facades ensure year-round functionality.
• Educational Infrastructure: The remaining units have been turned into modular school halls built to handle heavy snow and subzero temperatures. Each hall has a double-layer interlocking structure, with the ground floor set aside for kitchens, storage, and bathrooms, and the upper floor designed as a dining or activity space. Climate-control measures include cold-bridge prevention systems, drainage gutters, and sunrooms for improved insulation and natural lighting. All structures comply with national construction standards.

Through this initiative, COSCO SHIPPING Development has demonstrated its ability to combine advanced logistics with sustainable, community-oriented solutions, strengthening both tourism infrastructure and educational capacity in one of the world’s most demanding environments.
