In a significant step toward strengthening maritime safety and security, the Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the International Group of P&I Clubs (IG P&I). The agreement was exchanged during the high-profile conference “Jalasya Rakṣā, Janasya Surakṣā: Ocean Sentinel — Maritime Safety & Security in the 21st Century”.
The MoU also marked the start of DG Shipping’s 75-Year Commemorative Events, celebrating its decades-long role in regulating, guiding, and advancing India’s maritime sector.
The collaboration reflects a shared commitment to adopting global best practices, enhancing safety standards, and strengthening security frameworks in the maritime domain. Representing 12 member clubs that provide liability cover for nearly 90% of the world’s ocean-going tonnage, IG P&I brings unparalleled expertise and resources to support India’s shipping industry.
During the event, senior officials from both sides highlighted the growing importance of international cooperation to address modern maritime challenges, including cyber threats, environmental protection, and evolving safety regulations. The partnership will focus on knowledge sharing, capacity building, and joint initiatives in risk management, incident prevention, and crew welfare.
Attended by maritime leaders, policymakers, shipping executives, and industry experts, the conference served as a forum to discuss the future of maritime safety, security, and sustainability in a dynamic global trade environment.
This MoU marks a new chapter in India’s engagement with the international maritime community, reinforcing the country’s vision of becoming a secure, sustainable, and innovation-driven maritime hub.
