DHL Express has strengthened its air network in Asia with an upgrade to its Hong Kong–Penang service, adding significant cargo capacity to support rising demand between the two markets. The company has deployed a Boeing 767 freighter on the route, replacing the smaller Airbus A321 previously in operation.
The shift to the 767 provides DHL with an extra 20 tonnes of lift per flight, expanding the integrator’s ability to handle growing volumes within its Far East air network. Operated daily in partnership with Raya Airways, the enhanced service is expected to benefit manufacturers in Penang’s northern industrial corridor, a major hub for the technology and semiconductor sectors that rely heavily on time-critical logistics.
DHL said the 767’s greater range and payload capacity will enable more efficient consolidation of shipments, while offering Penang-based exporters improved connectivity to Hong Kong and onward global markets. The upgrade aligns with the company’s strategy of reinforcing capacity on high-growth intra-Asia trade lanes.
Despite a broader increase in air cargo capacity across intra-Asia and Asia–Europe routes, DHL recently indicated that it does not view the additional supply as a risk to its performance. During its third-quarter investor call, the company noted it has not had to modify pricing to manage competitive pressures.
In its latest quarterly results, the German logistics group reported airfreight volumes of 444,000 tonnes, nearly unchanged from the 445,000 tonnes recorded in the same period last year. DHL said shipment activity remained consistent with second-quarter trends, reflecting steady demand in key Asian manufacturing markets.
