Dubai-based port operator DP World has reached an agreement in principle with the Fujairah Ports Authority to develop two new terminals on the UAE’s east coast, strengthening its presence in an emirate that offers direct access to the Arabian Sea, bypassing the Strait of Hormuz.
What terminals will DP World develop in Fujairah?
Under a 50-year concession, DP World will build the Al Rugaylat container and multi-purpose terminal and the Dibba General Cargo terminal. The company said the development will expand its UAE capacity and gateway network, offering customers greater flexibility and connectivity across regional and global trade routes.
Why does the Fujairah location matter strategically?
Fujairah’s position on the UAE’s east coast gives shipments direct access to the Arabian Sea, allowing cargo to avoid transiting the Strait of Hormuz, a route that has faced heightened disruption amid regional tensions. The move comes after DP World’s flagship Jebel Ali container port in Dubai was forced to largely halt operations following the outbreak of armed conflict in the region.
How will this impact DP World’s UAE capacity?
The two new terminals will lift DP World’s container handling capacity in the UAE from 19.4 million TEUs to nearly 22 million TEUs, marking a significant expansion of its port network in the country.
