Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) Kandla is fast-tracking initiatives in green hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol to develop a large-scale clean energy ecosystem and strengthen its position on the global maritime map, Chairperson Sushil Kumar Singh said during the 79th Independence Day celebrations.
“Kandla Port has been declared a green hydrogen hub by the Government of India, and we are working to promote the entire ecosystem, including green ammonia and green methanol,” Singh said. He added that major industrial partners such as L&T and Reliance are already in the process of establishing giga-scale plants in the region.
On July 31, the port commissioned a 1 MW green hydrogen plant, inaugurated by Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal. The project forms part of a 10 MW facility, for which Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone during his visit to Bhuj on May 26. “One megawatt has been commissioned, and the remaining nine megawatts will be completed within this financial year,” Singh noted, calling it a significant step towards achieving Net Zero 2050 targets under India’s Green Hydrogen Mission.
During the Bhuj visit, the Prime Minister also inaugurated and dedicated development projects worth over ₹53,400 crore. Established in the 1950s to serve as western India’s key maritime gateway after Partition, Kandla — now Deendayal Port Authority — remains one of the country’s most important and busiest ports, strategically located on the Gulf of Kutch.
