Emirates SkyCargo has taken a significant step toward next-generation logistics solutions by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with LODD Autonomous to explore the use of cargo drones within its global operations. The agreement, formalised during the 2025 Dubai Airshow, aims to assess the feasibility of deploying Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) unmanned aircraft across Emirates’ extensive cargo network.

Under the MoU, both organisations will work together on a series of feasibility studies, regulatory consultations, and real-world demonstrations to evaluate how advanced drone technology can enhance air cargo delivery. The collaboration builds on the recent successful test flight of LODD’s Hili aircraft—an autonomous, hybrid heavy-lift cargo drone designed and built in Abu Dhabi.

The Hili platform is capable of fully autonomous operations from take-off to landing, can carry payloads of up to 250 kilograms, and has a travel range of approximately 700 kilometres, positioning it as a potential game-changer for regional cargo transport.

Emirates SkyCargo will remain involved in LODD’s experimental programme through 2027, offering operational insights to support the aircraft’s ongoing design and development. The airline is also evaluating how drone technology could support its own logistics efficiency, particularly across its dual-airport hub operations in Dubai.

The agreement was signed by Badr Abbas, Emirates SkyCargo’s Divisional Senior Vice President, and Rashid Al Manai, CEO of LODD Autonomous.

Earlier this year, Emirates introduced its new Emirates Courier Express service, offering direct point-to-point package delivery across its global network. While the airline did not confirm whether the Hili drone may eventually support this product, industry trends indicate a growing role for drones in last-mile and regional logistics applications.
