Everllence, the German engine maker formerly known as MAN, has achieved a key milestone by successfully testing an ethanol-fuelled version of its 21/31 dual-fuel engine at its Frederikshavn facilities.
The company, which introduced the industry’s first small-bore, four-stroke methanol engine in 2024—the 21/31DF-M—has several such units already operating commercially. Building on the same platform, engineers have now demonstrated stable and reliable performance using ethanol, giving Everllence a fully functioning test engine to validate the fuel’s viability.
According to the company, initial results align with earlier expectations, confirming that the 21/31 series can operate on ethanol without technical complications. Data analysis is continuing, but the successful trials mark another step in Everllence’s push toward multi-fuel, low-carbon propulsion solutions.
