FedEx has inaugurated a new global air transit facility at Istanbul Airport, underscoring Turkey’s growing role as a global air cargo hub and a vital gateway for cross-border e-commerce.
The 25,300 sq m facility features air gateway operations, integrated customs clearance teams, and office support. It includes an automated sorting system, AI-enabled security screening, and dangerous goods handling capabilities. With capacity to process up to 7,000 packages per hour—triple that of its previous site—the hub also houses three automated x-ray machines to boost speed, accuracy, and security.
FedEx highlighted Istanbul’s strategic position at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa. The new hub is connected by 30 weekly FedEx flights linking Turkey with the US, Europe, and the Middle East, and offers additional capacity for future network growth.
The facility also strengthens integration between the FedEx air network and its extensive road network, which serves 45 countries and handles 1.3 million shipments weekly.
Istanbul Airport, Europe’s busiest cargo hub in 2024, handled nearly 2 million tons of freight last year—a 24% increase year on year.
