Freight train traffic on WDFC set to surge 65% with JNP link by December 2025

Freight movements on the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) are projected to rise by 65% once the final 102-km stretch connecting Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNP) in Maharashtra is completed by December 2025. The 2,843-km Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) spans nine states, comprising the 1,506-km WDFC and the Eastern DFC (EDFC). While the EDFC is fully operational, 1,404 km—93.2%—of the WDFC is complete.

Currently, the WDFC section through Gujarat runs Trucks-on-Trains services, moving 25 wagons loaded with Amul milk trucks from Palanpur to Rewari in just 10 hours. Freight trains on the Indian Railways network typically operate at 32–34 kmph. On the WDFC, we average 60 kmph, with a target of 75 kmph once the JNP link is live.

The WDFC has already cut transit times for container and EXIM cargo by nearly 50%. Operations for the entire corridor are centrally managed from the Train Operational Control Centre in Ahmedabad, enabling streamlined scheduling and faster turnaround.
