The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) is moving ahead with its ambitious 2,177-kilometre railway network, a project set to redefine connectivity, trade, and sustainability across the region. Long reliant on road, sea, and air transport, the Gulf is grappling with rising trade volumes, population pressures, and environmental challenges. The GCC Railway is designed to ease these strains by shifting freight from road to rail—reducing logistics costs by up to 30% and cutting carbon emissions significantly.

Modeled on the European Union’s integrated transport framework, the railway will link industrial hubs like Oman’s Sohar with major cities such as Riyadh and Doha, enabling faster movement of goods and improving passenger mobility for tourists, professionals, and students. This enhanced connectivity is expected to foster cultural exchange, strengthen economic ties, and boost regional cooperation.

The project will also catalyze the development of logistics hubs, industrial parks, and commercial corridors, opening new avenues for local enterprises, foreign investors, and regional trade. By 2045, the network is projected to carry more than 95 million tonnes of freight and over 8 million passengers annually.

More than just an infrastructure initiative, the GCC Railway embodies a collective vision for unity, prosperity, and sustainability—positioning the Gulf as a more integrated and future-ready economic bloc.
