The third edition of Global Maritime India Summit 2023 is going to be held from 17 October 2023 to October 19, 2023 at Bhart Mandapam, Pragati Maidan in Delhi. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways has officially launched the curtain raiser to the Global Maritime India Summit 2023 which as a part was organised at Radisson Blu, Guwahati.

The road show event was initially addressed by Dr. Madhaiyaan Angamuthu, IAS, Chairman, DCIL/VPA. Subrata Choudhury, Additional Secretary of Transport Department, Tripura expressed his gratitude towards Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways and the Central Government for taking special interest in North eastern Staes development especially Tripura.

Sandeepan Chakraborty has given presentation on the river Pandu terminal project.

The roadshow that saw participation from neighbouring countries Bhutan and Bangladesh, also promoted regional collaboration highlighting the importance of a collective vision and enhanced connectivity within the maritime domain.

Guwahati stands as the fifth city to host this pre-event, following the footsteps of Kolkata, Mangalore, Vishakapatnam, and Goa. Following Guwahati, Chennai, Bhubaneshwar, Varanasi, and Kochi are slated to join the lineup.

Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated a roadshow on the Global Maritime India Summit, 2023 (GMIS).  Pitching the role of GMIS, 2023, the Union Minister highlighted how the role of inland waterways has evolved as an alternative mode of transportation, especially under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He said, inland waterways are strengthening the growth of the Indian economy. Sonowal mentioned that under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the inland waterways sector has received a tremendous boost as the Government has invested 5200 crores rupees since 2014.

In his address, Minister Sonowal highlighted the evolving role of inland waterways as a vital alternative mode of transportation. He highlighted the substantial growth of the inland waterways sector, attributing it to the government’s visionary investments totalling ₹5200 crores since 2014, marking an impressive surge of over 200% in investment compared to the preceding 28 years.

“Inland waterways are powering the growth of the Indian economy. By investing in this clean, efficient, and economical mode of transportation, we are creating a collaborative ecosystem that fosters cooperation among neighbouring countries. This will unlock significant trade and commerce potential for all countries and states in the South Asia region,” said Minister Sonowal.

Minister Sonowal also emphasised the government’s commitment to transform Indian ports to global standards, propelling industrialisation, manufacturing, and ease of doing business.

In addition to the participation of representatives from each Northeastern state, the event anticipates the attendance of foreign delegates from Bhutan and Bangladesh.

The event was graced by various dignitaries including Minister of Transport, Fisheries & Excise Department, Govt. of Assam, Parimal Suklabaidya, Minister of Industries & Commerce and Public Enterprises, Cultural Affairs, Govt of Assam, Bimal Borah, Minister for Water Resources, Govt. of Arunachal Pradesh, and Mama Natung.

The Global Maritime India Summit 2023 roadshow has previously been held in Kolkata, Mangalore, Vishakhapatnam, and Goa.
