The Union government is set to induct specialised naval architects into the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) as part of a broader overhaul aimed at strengthening India’s shipbuilding ecosystem and reducing dependence on foreign-built vessels.
According to officials aware of the proposal, the move will bolster the maritime regulator’s in-house technical capacity to evaluate ship design, safety norms and construction quality, enabling it to provide deeper consultancy support to domestic shipyards.
By embedding design and engineering expertise within the DGS, the government aims to align Indian regulatory practices with global standards while giving local shipyards access to structured technical guidance during project planning and execution.
The initiative, steered by the ministry of ports, shipping and waterways, is part of a wider policy push to promote shipbuilding, expand India’s maritime capabilities, enhance national security and catalyse growth in the domestic marine industry.
