Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal projected India’s exports to grow by around 6% in 2025 compared with last year, underlining resilience in trade despite global headwinds.

“India’s exports would grow by around 6% this year compared to the corresponding period last year. I believe we will end the year on a positive note,” Goyal told reporters, while stressing that free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations with several countries are progressing.

He said India, currently a $4 trillion economy, is on course to becoming a $30 trillion-plus economy in the Amritkal period, and global partners are keen to deepen ties with New Delhi. “India is the place to do business. The world would like to work closer with us,” he said.

Pointing to strengthening domestic conditions, Goyal highlighted that unemployment had fallen to 5.1%, the lowest in recent years. He dismissed concerns of a jobs crisis, citing industry examples. “When I met Larsen & Toubro, they said they were unable to complete projects on time because they don’t get enough workers. Even their IT arm is looking for people,” he noted.

The minister said India’s growth momentum—supported by infrastructure expansion, rising consumer demand under GST 2.0, and its position as the fastest-growing large economy—will boost investment, trade, and job creation.

On FTAs, Goyal said talks with the European Union have made “rapid progress,” with guidance from EU President Ursula von der Leyen and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to conclude negotiations by year-end. “We may have another round soon, either virtually or physically,” he added.

Highlighting the success of India’s pact with the UAE—negotiated and signed in just 88 days—Goyal said exports to the Gulf nation have been “growing rapidly.” He described the UAE as a key gateway for Africa, the Gulf, and Eastern Europe, and noted rising Emirati investment interest in India. “I am confident this partnership will only strengthen further,” he said.

Similar trade discussions are underway with Peru, Chile, New Zealand, Oman and others. “Many countries want to start FTA talks because India has immense potential,” Goyal said.
