Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd has emerged as the lowest bidder for the construction and delivery of a 15-tonne bollard pull electric tug for Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata. The project adds to GRSE’s growing portfolio in green vessel technologies and underscores its ability to compete in both defence and commercial shipbuilding.
The tug will be 25 metres long and 8 metres wide, and will run on battery power. It is designed to generate a static ahead bollard pull of 15 tonnes, with an endurance of two hours of continuous operation and a maximum speed of 9 knots.
Built to IACS classification standards, the vessel will use advanced battery-propulsion technology to cut emissions and support cleaner port operations. The project aligns with the maritime sector’s wider shift toward decarbonisation and greener operating practices.
GRSE has already delivered a fully electric ferry to the Government of West Bengal and is building 13 hybrid ferries for the same customer. It is also executing 12 multi-purpose vessels for a German company, including four with green propulsion systems, while advanced talks continue for five Next Generation Corvettes.
The shipyard has delivered 118 warships to the Indian Navy, the Indian Coast Guard, and friendly foreign nations, the highest number by any shipyard in India. Backed by in-house design strength and modern production facilities, GRSE continues to expand beyond defence into emerging maritime segments.
