Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) Ltd and Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to form a consortium for a large-scale, strategically important national shipbuilding programme tendered by Shipping Corporation of India (SCI). The MoU was signed in Kolkata on February 9, 2026, by GRSE Director (Shipbuilding) Cdr Shantanu Bose, IN (Retd.), and HSL Officiating Chairman & Managing Director Capt Ganti Venkateswarlu, IN (Retd.), in the presence of senior officials from both defence PSUs.
The partnership aims to jointly bid for and execute construction of advanced maritime platforms, leveraging the complementary strengths of both shipyards in hull design, complex warship building, repair and lifecycle support. According to official statements, the consortium is expected to enhance India’s maritime infrastructure, technological self-reliance and long-term operational capabilities, aligning with the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat vision in defence and shipbuilding.
Both GRSE and HSL bring extensive experience in naval and commercial shipbuilding, with proven capacities in delivering frontline warships, fleet support vessels and specialist platforms for the Indian Navy and other agencies. By pooling infrastructure, design capabilities and project management expertise, the consortium aims to optimise build timelines, reduce costs and strengthen India’s position as a self-reliant shipbuilding power in the Indo-Pacific.
