Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) Ltd. has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Damen Technical Cooperation B.V., Netherlands, to explore the design and construction of advanced dredgers in India.

The agreement was signed on 2 September 2026 during the SMM Hamburg maritime trade fair in Germany. GRSE is a Navratna Defence Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Defence, Government of India.

The collaboration will establish a technical and business framework combining GRSE’s shipbuilding capabilities with Damen’s expertise in specialised dredging vessels, including Trailing Suction Hopper Dredgers (TSHD) and Water Injection Dredgers (WID).

Key areas of collaboration

Under the MoU, GRSE and Damen will explore cooperation in advanced dredger design and technology, technical know-how transfer, and the preparation of joint design and construction proposals.

The companies will also work towards developing indigenous dredger-building capabilities in India and establishing longer-term cooperation to address future dredging requirements.

Existing GRSE-Damen collaboration

The agreement builds on the existing relationship between the two companies, which includes a 1,000 m³ dredger currently under construction by GRSE for the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA).

The latest MoU is expected to support GRSE’s expansion into the specialised dredger segment while contributing to the development of domestic capabilities for dredging and maritime infrastructure projects.

“Combining global design expertise with Indian shipbuilding strength to build the next generation of dredgers for India and beyond.”
