Haldia Dock Complex (HDC), part of Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata, has resumed coastal thermal coal handling at its rejuvenated mechanical facility, marking a significant operational revival after a nine-month interval.
What the current shipment involves
The facility is currently loading around 27,100 metric tonnes of thermal coal for Andhra Pradesh Power Development Company Ltd (APPDCL) at berth number 3, the port said in a statement. This is the first such shipment for APPDCL through HDC’s mechanical plant in nine months. After sailing from Haldia, the vessel will call at Paradip Port before delivering the cargo to its final destination at Krishnapatnam.
Impact on eastern coast logistics
The revival of the facility is expected to boost cargo throughput, improve vessel turnaround time and strengthen HDC’s position as a key hub for coastal shipping and energy logistics on India’s eastern coast.
What port officials said
SMP Kolkata Chairman Rathendra Raman said the resumption of coastal thermal coal handling reflects the port team’s engineering capability and customer-focused approach. He added that rejuvenating the mechanical facility allows port authorities to enhance logistics capabilities while playing a pivotal role in powering energy needs across India.
