A high-level Hamburg Port Authority delegation visited Indian ports in February 2026, enhancing Indo-German maritime cooperation on sustainability, digitalization, and trade corridors.
Led by HPA CEO Jens Meier and Hamburg Senator Dr. Melanie Leonhard, the group met in New Delhi with the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways and Invest India, then hosted at Chennai and Kamarajar (Ennore) ports. Discussions covered smart technologies, decarbonization, and supply chain resilience, with HPA sharing automation insights.
Hamburg logged a record 290,000 TEU in direct 2025 container throughput with India, up nearly 50% year-on-year, ranking India sixth among partners amid EU-India FTA momentum. Growth spans containers (+49% to India), driven by textiles, pharma, and autos.
The visit aligns Hamburg’s strengths with India’s Sagarmala goals, eyeing investments in green energy, multimodal links, and IMEC integration for sustained cargo flows. It builds on prior surges, positioning both as future-ready hubs.
