Hapag-Lloyd has expanded its Fleet Upgrade Program with the introduction of innovative windshields, marking another milestone in its decarbonization journey. Launched in 2022, the program aims to modernize more than 100 vessels through efficiency-boosting measures such as new propellers, optimized bulbous bows, and advanced hull coatings.
The newly added windshields, designed to reduce aerodynamic drag and enhance fuel efficiency, have already been retrofitted on the Cochrane, Antwerpen Express, and Shanghai Express, with additional vessels slated for upgrades. Backed by DNV research, the technology is projected to cut fuel consumption by around 1%.
Hapag-Lloyd has also incorporated the feature into its latest newbuilds — the Genova Express and Wilhelmshaven Express — ensuring the benefits are integrated from day one. By combining these retrofits with other ongoing upgrades, the company is on track to achieve its 2030 goal of reducing fleet emissions by one-third compared to 2022 levels.
